We will begin with Tlatelolco, the largest archaeological site in Mexico City, which was part of the capital of the Aztec Empire. The largest market in the empire was located here, and it was also where the conquest of the Aztecs took place. The city of Tlatelolco was once connected to the north by a great avenue that went to Tepeyac Hill, where the Aztecs worshiped Tonantzin, who is better known today as Our Lady of Guadalupe, and it is in precisely in this place where we will make our next stop.
Today popularly known as La Villa or the Basilica of Guadalupe, it is the most important religious site in the country and one of the most visited Catholic places in the world. The Virgin of Guadalupe in Mexico is not only a religious symbol, but an identity for Mexicans. It is no coincidence that the first president of the country was named Guadalupe Victoria.
